Minimally Invasive BPH Treatments

What is Rezūm Water Vapor Therapy?

The Rezūm procedure is a minimally invasive treatment for benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), using steam to shrink the enlarged prostate and alleviate symptoms. It’s a non-surgical option that can be performed in a clinic or outpatient surgery facility.

How it works

A special instrument is inserted into the urethra, and sterile water vapor (steam) is injected into the prostate. The steam causes the prostate tissue to die, and the body absorbs and removes the dead tissue over time, shrinking the prostate.

Clinical Advantages

Rezūm offers several advantages over traditional BPH treatments, including a shorter recovery time, fewer side effects, and the potential to preserve sexual function.

Frequently Asked Questions

Rezum FAQ

How long do the benefits of Rezum last?
Although Rezum is a newer procedure, we do have data on its efficacy and durability. Studies have demonstrated the benefits of Rezum to last for at least 5 years, with re-treatment rates of approximately 4.4%. This is equivalent to other gold standard BPH treatments like TURP.
How long does the procedure take?

Only 15 minutes.

My prostate is bigger than 80 mL; can I still have Rezum?

Studies have demonstrated benefit for men whose prostate volume is between 30 and 80mL and this is reflected in the Canadian Urologic Association guidelines. Some men with prostates larger than this may still derive benefit- supported by expert opinion- but we do not have robust data to support this.
Dr. Langley reviews each case individually and will provide an opinion as to whether Rezum may benefit you.

What type of anesthesia is required?

Light sedation is all that is needed.

When can I return to my normal activities?

You should be able to return to all of your usually activities within 24 hours.

Why doesn’t OHIP cover Rezum?

The Ontario government has concluded that, although this is a safe and efficacious procedure, they are unwilling to provide the funding to make this available at no cost to the public.

Why is a catheter required after the procedure?

Catheter will typically remain in place between 3-4 days. In some special circumstances (i.e. If you already require a catheter), this period may be longer.

Will I need to be admitted to hospital?

No; you will be monitored for a short period of time after the procedure and then discharged to recover in the comfort of your own home.

Will Rezum cause any changes to my ejaculation?

One of the principal benefits of Rezum is preservation of erectile function. However, there is a small (less than 2%) risk of developing retrograde ejaculation.

Will Rezum cause any negative effects on my erectile function?

To date, no studies have shown a negative impact on erectile function.
